About the role

Customs Import Specialist | Evening & Overnight

Know customs. Solve problems. Keep trade moving when it matters most.

At GHY, we don’t just move goods across borders. We help businesses navigate complexity and trade with confidence.

For more than a century, we’ve helped importers and exporters navigate global markets. As one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies and a family-led organization, we’ve built our reputation on expertise, integrity, innovation, and genuinely caring about our clients and one another.

If you have strong customs experience, know the release process inside and out, and enjoy solving the issues that keep trade moving, this could be your next opportunity.

About the Role:

As a Customs Import Specialist, you’ll play a key role in keeping our clients’ shipments moving across the Canada-U.S. border during critical evening and overnight hours.

This isn't an entry-level customs role. You'll use your experience across the pre- and post-release process to prioritize shipments, troubleshoot rejects, assign tariff classifications, manage PGA requirements, process corrections, and work directly with customs authorities, clients, carriers, and vendors.

You’ll have the ability to solve problems as they arise while being part of an experienced team that understands just how important accuracy, urgency, and sound judgment are in customs brokerage.

What You’ll Do:

  • 🌎 Keep cross-border trade moving. Prioritize shipments by ETA and ensure timely submission to both CBP and CBSA.
  • 🔎 Solve the issues others can’t leave until morning. Monitor alerts, investigate and resolve rejects, and address release issues as they arise.
  • 📋 Get the details right. Assign appropriate tariff classifications and PGA data to support accurate customs processing.
  • 🚚 Support the full release process. Complete carrier eManifests and manage pre- and post-release activity, including RMD corrections.
  • 📊 Stay ahead of entries. Monitor entries through CADEX and take action when something requires attention.
  • 📞 Keep everyone connected. Communicate professionally with customs representatives, clients, carriers, vendors, and internal teams to gather information and resolve issues.
  • 📝 Protect the audit trail. Maintain clear eLogs and documentation so actions, decisions, and corrections are accurately supported.
  • 💡 Use your experience. Recognize when something doesn't look right, investigate the issue, and take appropriate action to keep shipments moving while protecting compliance.

Who You Are:

You’re someone who already understands customs brokerage and doesn’t need every situation to come with step-by-step instructions.

You bring:

  • Strong understanding of the customs release process, including pre- and post-release activities
  • Working knowledge of CBP and CBSA requirements
  • Experience with tariff classification and Partner Government Agency requirements
    Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • The ability to prioritize time-sensitive shipments and competing deadlines
  • Confidence communicating with clients, customs authorities, carriers, vendors, and teammates
  • The ability to work independently while knowing when an issue needs to be escalated
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

You know how quickly priorities can change when shipments are approaching the border, and you can stay organized, make sound decisions, and communicate clearly when something needs attention.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Approximately 5 years of customs brokerage or related industry experience
  • Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designation
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • U.S. Customs Broker License is an asset
  • Experience with Canadian and U.S. customs release processes is strongly preferred
