Senior UX Designer
About the role
About CoLab
At CoLab, we help mechanical engineering teams bring life-changing products to market years sooner.
We build AI for engineers designing cars, medical devices, and jet engines. Products this complex aren't sketched and sent to production. Teams spend months on iterations, reviews, and tests, predicting how every part performs before anything is built. CoLab is where those reviews happen, and we capture the rationale behind every change. Other tools show what changed between versions. Only CoLab knows why. That's how our AI helps manufacturers like Bobcat, Triumph Motorcycles, and GE Appliances make better decisions, eliminate rework cycles, and get to market faster.
Proudly based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, CoLab started with one customer in 2018. Since then we’ve raised a $72M Series C, been named the 57th fastest growing company in North America by Deloitte (Fast 500™), signed multi-year AI partnerships with companies like Bombardier, and grown to a team of 250+.
About the Role
As a Senior UX Designer, you’ll both lead design and partner with other designers to create AI-powered experiences across CoLab. You’ll help shape how engineers interact with AI, evaluate its recommendations and work alongside agents to accomplish complex tasks.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role. You’ll bring strong skills across the full design process, from discovery and problem definition to interaction design, visual polish, and implementation with particular depth in designing AI interfaces.
You’ll partner closely with product managers, engineers, and AI specialists to explore what’s possible, define useful applications, and build experiences grounded in customer needs. As a Senior designer, you’ll also guide design direction across squads, mentor other designers, and establish shared patterns for AI interactions throughout CoLab.
Our Ideal Candidate
You’re an experienced UX designer with a demonstrated track record of making AI useful to people. You’ve worked beyond demos and prototypes, and you can speak to what happened when real users encountered your designs: what they understood, where they struggled, and how you improved the experience.
You know when conversation is a useful interaction model and when a structured workflow, direct manipulation, or a combination of approaches will serve users better. You think carefully about how people provide context, communicate intent, review results, and stay in control as AI takes on more work.
You’re comfortable designing for uncertainty. You consider incomplete information, incorrect outputs, long-running tasks, and unexpected behavior as part of the core experience. You help users understand what the system is doing, what needs their attention, and how to correct or recover from a mistake.
You also bring the judgment and influence expected of a Senior designer. You help teams navigate ambiguity, connect decisions across product areas, and balance near-term delivery with a coherent longer-term experience. You care deeply about research, interaction quality, accessibility, and visual craft.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead, partner and support UX design for AI-powered products and workflows from discovery through implementation and iteration.
- Partner with product, engineering, and AI specialists to identify valuable customer problems and shape how AI capabilities address them.
- Design conversational, contextual, and agent-driven interfaces that help users express intent, provide relevant information, and act on results.
- Design agent orchestration experiences that make plans, task progress, dependencies, approvals, and handoffs understandable and manageable.
- Establish clear patterns for human oversight, including reviewing proposed actions, setting boundaries, intervening in execution, and recovering from errors.
- Help users evaluate AI outputs through appropriate source context, explanations, and visibility into system limitations.
- Plan and conduct customer discovery, usability testing, and prototype validation, including realistic scenarios where AI outputs are incomplete, incorrect, or unexpected.
- Create design artifacts across the full fidelity spectrum, from workflow diagrams and wireframes to interactive prototypes and polished interfaces.
- Partner with engineers throughout implementation and evaluate the resulting experience using customer feedback, product data, and AI performance insights.
- Contribute shared AI interaction patterns to our design system, align experiences across teams, and mentor other designers
Qualifications
- Significant product or UX design experience, typically gained through 5+ years of practice, with a track record of leading complex initiatives at a Senior level.
- Demonstrated experience designing and shipping AI-powered interfaces. Your portfolio should show your contributions, the behavior of the AI system, the interaction decisions you made, and what you learned from real-world use.
- Substantial experience with one or more of the following: conversational interfaces, LLM-powered workflows, AI assistants, autonomous or semi-autonomous agents, or agent orchestration tools.
- A practical understanding of how AI behavior affects UX, including variability in outputs, latency, context limitations, and failure modes.
- Strong UX fundamentals, including information architecture, interaction design, visual design, accessibility, and systems thinking.
- Fluency in Figma and the ability to build prototypes that communicate dynamic interactions and system behavior.
- Using AI tools like Claude and Codex to accelerate your design process with code-based prototypes
- Strong collaboration with technical partners and the ability to make clear trade-offs between user needs, model capabilities, engineering constraints, and business goals.
- Experience influencing design direction across teams and helping other designers improve their work.
Nice to Have:
- Education or practical knowledge in machine learning, how LLMs work, or agent architecture.
- Experience designing controls for agent permissions, action approvals, activity history, or auditability in enterprise environments.
- Experience collaborating on AI evaluations and connecting measures of model quality with usability, task success, and user trust.
- Ability to prototype with code, APIs, or AI development tools to explore realistic interactions, potentially submitting your own PRs for simpler collaboration
- Experience designing for engineering, manufacturing, or other technical domains where accuracy and human judgment matter.
