About the role

Abstract

Laurium Capital is an independent, owner-managed investment manager, founded in 2008, with a team of 46 and offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and London. It manages R85 billion across hedge funds, South African equity, Africa, global and multi-asset strategies. Its small Data & Quants team is taking on one or two graduates in January 2027 to work on the data, infrastructure and technology the firm runs on.

1. The Role

1.1. Full-stack software development. Building and maintaining the firm's software end to end: the cloud data platform, the pipelines and checks that keep its data accurate, and the applications people use every day.

1.2. AI tooling and automation. Designing and building agents, skills and workflows that help the firm find, check and analyse data, and automate routine work.

1.3. Quantitative analysis. Much of the firm's risk modelling, performance attribution and portfolio analytics sits with the team, along with quantitative questions from portfolio managers, business development and the founders.

1.4. Direction. The roadmap is open; interns help deliver it and shape what comes next.

2. What to Expect

The structure is flat, and interns see the whole business, from investment decisions to client reports. There is a lot of work and responsibility for a graduate: interns are expected to hit the ground running and to own part of the platform or tooling within a few months. There is a great deal to learn and room to grow into the team. The role is office-based in Sandton (Cape Town only by exception), because most of the learning happens by sitting next to people. It won't be dull.

3. Requirements

  • Applicants MUST hold, by January 2027, a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or similar (Bachelor's, Honours or Master's).
  • Applicants MUST be able to code and be familiar with software development and its tools, such as git, the command line, Docker and cloud platforms.
  • Applicants MUST be fluent and enthusiastic in building with AI workflows, with something to show for it.
  • Applicants SHOULD write clearly and have a close eye for detail; much of the job is explaining what a number means and why it is right.
  • Knowledge of finance is PREFERRED.

4. Current Stack

  • Frontend: React
  • Backend: FastAPI, Bash
  • AI: Claude Code, LangGraph
  • Cloud: Azure, Terraform, Docker
  • Data: PostgreSQL, Parquet
  • Code: R, Python, SQL, GitHub

5. Terms

  • Start: January 2027
  • Duration: 12 months, full-time, with a view to a permanent role
  • Salary: Competitive
  • Location: Sandton, Johannesburg

6. Application Procedure

Apply using the form on this page, with (a) a CV, (b) an academic transcript, (c) a link to a GitHub profile or other work, and (d) up to 300 words on something you built or automated with AI tools, including what went wrong. Applications close on 31 October 2026. Shortlisted applicants do a practical task and an interview in Sandton, arranged around exams.
