Software Development Engineer III
- Hybrid
- Full Time
About the role
About the role:
The SDE III React Developer is a senior, hands-on engineering role responsible for designing and building high-quality, scalable, secure, and maintainable web applications using React, TypeScript, and the modern JavaScript ecosystem.
This role serves as a technical leader and engineering anchor for the team, combining deep hands-on development with strong technical leadership. The engineer will independently own complex features, drive technical design and implementation decisions, establish engineering patterns and best practices, and help the team deliver high-quality solutions faster and more predictably.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in React web development and the surrounding ecosystem, with experience working in a monorepo architecture containing multiple applications, shared libraries, reusable components, common dependencies, build tooling, testing frameworks, and development standards. This individual will also be a dependable technical partner to the Engineering Manager, helping evaluate technical options, resolve complex engineering challenges, identify risks and dependencies early, and provide clear technical direction for the team.
In this role, you will:
- Design, develop, test, and deliver complex production web applications using React and TypeScript.
- Remain deeply hands-on with development while serving as a technical leader for the engineering team.
- Own complex features and technical initiatives from design and implementation through testing, deployment, observability, and production support.
- Lead technical design discussions and make sound decisions around application architecture, component design, state management, data flows, API integration, performance, security, accessibility, and testing.
- Work effectively within a monorepo architecture, including multiple applications, shared components, shared libraries, utilities, configurations, dependencies, and common development tooling.
- Design and evolve reusable React components, shared libraries, common services, hooks, utilities, and engineering patterns while maintaining clear boundaries between applications and packages.
- Drive appropriate decisions around React architecture, component composition, state management, server-state management, routing, caching, error handling, and application lifecycle.
- Integrate frontend applications with RESTful APIs and backend services, ensuring reliable, secure, and performant application behavior.
- Drive solutions that balance delivery speed, maintainability, scalability, technical debt, developer experience, and long-term architecture.
- Identify technical blockers, architectural concerns, dependencies, and delivery risks early and actively drive them to resolution.
- Serve as a trusted technical partner to the Engineering Manager, providing technical recommendations and supporting important engineering and delivery decisions.
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pairing, reusable patterns, troubleshooting, and knowledge sharing.
- Help translate ambiguous and complex requirements into clear technical designs and executable engineering work.
- Establish and reinforce engineering practices for unit testing, integration testing, automated testing, code quality, security, and regression prevention.
- Troubleshoot complex issues across application code, shared libraries, APIs, dependencies, builds, CI/CD pipelines, and production environments.
- Contribute to and improve CI/CD pipelines, automated quality gates, build processes, deployment processes, dependency management, and release practices.
- Improve developer experience, build performance, application performance, maintainability, and overall engineering efficiency across the monorepo.
- Collaborate closely with Product, UX, Architecture, API/backend engineering, SRE, QA, and other engineering teams to deliver business outcomes.
- Stay current with the evolving React, TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js tooling, testing, build, and frontend engineering ecosystem and introduce improvements where they provide meaningful value.
What makes you a dream candidate?
- Deep hands-on expertise in React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, with extensive experience building production-grade web applications.
- Expert understanding of React architecture, including component composition, hooks, rendering behavior, application lifecycle, reusable patterns, and maintainable application design.
- Strong understanding of the modern frontend ecosystem and the Node.js-based tooling that supports React development.
- Experience designing and maintaining large-scale React applications, beyond individual pages or UI components.
- Strong experience working with a monorepo architecture and shared packages or libraries using technologies such as Nx, Turborepo, pnpm/Yarn/npm workspaces, or equivalent tooling.
- Strong understanding of package boundaries, dependency management, shared-library architecture, dependency graphs, build tooling, and reusable application capabilities.
- Experience building and maintaining shared component libraries and design systems.
- Strong experience with modern state-management and server-state approaches such as Redux Toolkit, Zustand, TanStack Query, Context API, or equivalent solutions.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, asynchronous data flows, authentication and authorization, error handling, and resilient frontend/backend integration.
- Strong understanding of frontend performance optimization, including rendering optimization, bundle size, code splitting, lazy loading, caching, and identifying client-side performance bottlenecks.
- Strong understanding of web accessibility and WCAG-aligned engineering practices.
- Strong knowledge of secure frontend development, dependency security, authentication flows, and protection of sensitive client-side data.
- Strong experience with automated testing using technologies such as Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright, Cypress, or equivalent tools.
- Experience with Git, pull-request workflows, CI/CD, automated quality gates, deployment pipelines, and modern software-delivery practices.
- Experience with cloud and observability platforms such as Azure, Application Insights, Splunk, or comparable technologies is preferred.
- Exceptional debugging and problem-solving ability, including the ability to diagnose problems spanning application code, APIs, shared libraries, third-party dependencies, build systems, and runtime environments.
- Demonstrated ability to take complex or ambiguous requirements and independently drive them from technical design through production implementation.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical direction while remaining a strong hands-on contributor.
- Ability to evaluate competing technical approaches, clearly communicate trade-offs, and make pragmatic engineering decisions.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, architects, Product, UX, SRE, and engineering leadership.
- Ability to influence technical direction without requiring formal authority and raise the technical capability of the broader team.
Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with significant production React and TypeScript development experience.
- Demonstrated experience as a senior engineer or technical lead delivering complex web applications.
- Experience owning solutions across the full software development lifecycle, including technical design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
- Experience working with large-scale frontend codebases, preferably using a monorepo and shared-library architecture.
- Experience establishing and applying frontend architecture, reusable patterns, coding standards, testing strategies, and engineering best practices.
- Experience with modern testing, CI/CD, build, dependency-management, and deployment practices.
- Understanding of cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure and modern observability practices is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience preferred.
