Highway Superintendent

The Town of Essex is actively recruiting for a key leadership position within our Highway Public Works team, the Highway Superintendent.

The Highway Superintendent reports directly to the Public Works Director and is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the field operations for the Highway and Vehicle Maintenance divisions of the Public Works Department.  

This position requires a high level of independent judgement to evaluate problems and organize and implement solutions effectively and efficiently.  The Highway Superintendent supervises the Highway Foremen and all highway employees.  The position makes frequent routine contacts with the general public, vendors, state government and other municipalities.

The ideal candidate will have:

• An associate’s degree in relevant area of expertise
• Ten (10) years experience in highway, water/sewer, maintenance, construction procedures and methods and equipment operations
• Proven ability to supervise and lead others
• Three (3) winter seasons experience performing winter plowing with a heavy-duty dump truck that has a plow or wing attached
• A valid commercial driver’s license (minimum class B is preferred)

The salary range for this position is $ 90,000 to $ 110,000 per year depending on experience.  Regular work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, hours may vary depending upon needs of the municipality.  Continuing education may be required.
