Job Summary
Acuity is where bold ideas become intelligent, connected products. As a Software Developer in our Electronics organisation, you will join a collaborative engineering environment working across software applications, cloud-connected components, IoT and AI. Based in our Cork office, you will contribute to the development of software controllers, configuration and calibration tools, user interfaces and connected-product capabilities for Acuity's lighting control systems.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary Scrum squad, collaborating with Product Owners, Squad Leaders, architects, hardware, firmware, quality and other software engineers. You will contribute to design, implementation, testing, debugging and documentation, while developing practical experience in AI-assisted engineering. AI tools will be used responsibly to accelerate learning and delivery, with all outputs critically reviewed and validated to protect engineering quality, security and customer trust.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Design, develop, test and maintain software applications and connected-product features across backend and frontend components using C#, JavaScript and React.
- Contribute to system designs, technical specifications, implementation details and code for features connecting software, cloud, mobile and device components.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools responsibly to support requirements understanding, design exploration, code generation and refactoring, test creation, debugging, documentation and knowledge discovery.
- Critically review and validate AI-generated code, tests, analysis and documentation before use, ensuring correctness, maintainability, security, traceability and alignment with team standards.
- Participate in software design discussions, peer code reviews and technical problem solving, seeking guidance from senior engineers and contributing constructive feedback to colleagues.
- Collaborate with Product Owners, Squad Leaders, architects, QA engineers and other developers to clarify requirements and deliver software that meets business and technical expectations.
- Create and maintain unit tests and investigate software defects.
- Work with hardware and firmware teams on device communication, integration and debugging using technologies such as TCP, UDP, BLE, Thread or comparable protocols.
- Participate actively in Agile planning, backlog refinement, daily Scrum, reviews and retrospectives, providing clear progress updates and raising risks or impediments early.
- Follow coding standards, secure engineering practices, version-control workflows and CI/CD processes, and help manage technical debt to sustain long-term product quality.
- Continuously build knowledge of the product, technology stack and AI-assisted development practices, sharing learning with the squad and applying feedback to improve delivery.
Skills and Minimum Experience Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, MIS or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 2-3 years of professional software development experience, ideally within an Agile/Scrum product-development environment.
- Practical experience developing software using C#/.NET, JavaScript and a modern frontend framework such as React.
- Working knowledge of software design, object-oriented development, debugging, code review, unit testing and maintainable engineering practices.
- Experience using Git or a comparable version-control system and contributing through collaborative development workflows.
- Awareness of connected-product or IoT concepts, including APIs, network communication, cloud-connected applications or hardware-software integration.
- Practical understanding of AI-assisted software engineering, including how to provide useful context and critically review and validate AI-generated outputs rather than relying on them without verification.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to learn quickly, communicate clearly and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to secure, responsible and ethical use of AI and software engineering tools, including appropriate handling of confidential information and intellectual property.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Hands-on experience with one or more of C++, Python, HTML, Node.js, SQL, Azure or Azure DevOps.
- Practical use of GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT or comparable AI-assisted engineering tools within a controlled development workflow.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, build tooling, package management and modern software-delivery practices.
- Exposure to TCP, UDP, BLE, Thread, device provisioning, firmware-update workflows or other connected-device technologies.
- Experience with mobile or cross-platform development, including iOS, Android, Xamarin/MAUI or comparable frameworks.
- Background in lighting, IoT devices, wireless systems or hardware-software integrated products.
- The Software Developer is expected to deliver defined engineering work with increasing independence, contribute effectively to squad decisions and continue building technical breadth, product knowledge and engineering judgement
