What Is the Opportunity?
The Lead Architect for this platform will report directly to the AVP of Data Products and Enablement and serve as the primary architectural authority for the GenBI Insights Platform — owning its reference architecture, driving its technical strategy, and ensuring that as the platform matures and expands, it does so on a foundation that is coherent, production-hardened, observable, and trustworthy. You will collaborate closely with Line of Business architecture and engineering teams across the enterprise, ensuring the platform's architecture remains aligned with — and additive to — the broader technology landscape it operates within.
This is a role for an architect who is as rigorous about production reliability and observability as they are energized by advancing a platform that is genuinely breaking new ground for the enterprise. The GenBI Insights Platform has a strong architectural foundation and genuine organizational momentum behind it. The work ahead — proving the architecture through implementation, hardening capabilities for production, and advancing the platform into agentic territory — is substantial, consequential, and technically rich. This is not a maintenance role or a steady-state assignment. It is the work of taking something with real potential and making sure the architecture is equal to it.
The foundation is set. The harder, more interesting work is what comes next.
What Will You Do?
- Scope:
- You will own the reference architecture for the GenBI Insights Platform as it moves from concept through implementation and into ongoing capability expansion — refining it as the platform encounters real-world complexity, extending it as new capabilities are brought into scope, making buy vs build decisions and maintaining its coherence as the technology landscape it depends on continues to evolve.
- You will set the architectural standards the platform is built to and provide the technical direction that ensures every new component strengthens rather than complicates the overall design.
- You will drive the architectural strategy for the platform's AI capabilities with a sustained focus on what it takes to move from early implementation to production-ready at enterprise scale.
- You will collaborate actively with Line of Business architecture and engineering teams to ensure the platform's design accounts for varied data landscapes, integration patterns, and use case requirements across Travelers' business units.
- You will engage with peer architects across EDDA's value streams, contributing the platform's perspective to cross-domain architectural decisions and incorporating theirs into the platform's continuing evolution.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- Technical Expertise & Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in technology-related field or equivalent, with 8 to 10 years of architecture experience.
- Advanced level architecture and recent hands-on strong engineering experience with modern technologies.
- Successful execution of complex, large scale technology strategies.
- You bring substantial architecture experience with genuine depth in AI, data, and knowledge architecture.
- You have worked with enterprise context layers and you understand the tooling landscape, the structural trade-offs, and the downstream implications of the modeling decisions made at this layer
- On the AI side, your experience is current and applied. You have worked with RAG-based architectures, vectorization approaches, and LLM evaluation frameworks in real delivery contexts, and you understand what separates a well-constructed AI capability from one that looks good in a demo and struggles in production. You know what observability, traceability, and hallucination mitigation require at the architectural level — not as concepts, but as design decisions with real implementation consequences.
- Leadership & Influence:
- Advanced leadership skills with the ability to leverage cross-functional networks to collaborate with architecture and engineering leaders on problem-solving, build company-wide credibility, prioritize critical architectural challenges, and strengthen the Architecture organization through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and creating development opportunities for team members.
- Strategic & Business Acumen:
- Extensive experience working in an agile operational model.
- Advanced experience supporting transformational change. Able to adjust plans, priorities and strategies in response to changing circumstances.
- Experience developing technology target states and roadmaps that align to short- and long-term business goals.
- Insurance technology experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of value creation and business capability models.
- Strong knowledge of the insurance industry.
- Advanced experience identifying and analyzing current/future problems and opportunities, evaluating information to understand root causes, and exploring alternative solutions for effective decision-making.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve mutually responsible results.
- Extensive experience exercising sound judgment, making decisions and committing to a position.
- Advanced and effective verbal, written and listening communication skills.
What is a Must Have?
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
- 7 additional years of architecture/software engineering experience.
- 2 years of technical leadership experience.
