We encourage candidates to apply as soon as possible.

What does the job involve?

Help define how AI transforms one of Europe's largest energy companies.

The next generation of AI will not be built around chatbots. It will be built around intelligent agents that reason, plan, collaborate and take action.

At Equinor, we are building agentic AI solutions that support engineers, geoscientists, operators, supply chain specialists and business teams across a global organisation. We're looking for a Principal Agentic AI Expert who wants to push the boundaries of what we can achieve with AI in the energy sector.

If you enjoy solving hard technical problems, experimenting with emerging technologies and helping turn cutting-edge AI into systems that deliver measurable business value, we want to hear from you.

Why join us?

You'll work on challenges that few organisations can offer:

o Massive industrial and enterprise data environments.
o Real-world problems with tangible impact on energy production, emission reductions and energy security.
o Large-scale deployment of AI solutions.
o Access to large-scale enterprise and industrial data and access to modern AI platforms and technologies.
o Collaboration with highly skilled engineers, data scientists and domain experts.
o Opportunity to influence how agentic AI evolves in the energy sector.

Most importantly, you'll help build solutions that move beyond pilots and into everyday use.

What will my tasks be?

Within this position, your key tasks will be to:

  • Lead the design and development of advanced agentic AI solutions.
  • Explore and apply emerging techniques in AI agents, reasoning systems, orchestration and multimodal AI.
  • Work hands-on with large language models, retrieval systems, AI agents and enterprise integrations.
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to bring solutions from idea to production.
  • Evaluate models, frameworks and architectures, identifying what creates real business value.
  • Help establish best practices for scalable, reliable and responsible AI.
  • Mentor colleagues and contribute to the growth of Equinor's AI community.
  • Represent Equinor in external AI communities, conferences and collaborations when relevant.

Here's what we expect from you:

At Equinor, there are some overall qualities we regard as essential. We want you to identify with the values that guide our decisions and help us succeed and grow: open, collaborative, courageous and caring. We expect you to make safety your priority and to contribute to our zero-harm culture. And for this specific position, we are also looking for:

We think you bring

  • Master´s or PhD in operations research, applied mathematics, computer science, data science, control/automation, engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong practical experience with generative AI and modern language models.
  • Proven ability to build and deploy AI solutions in production environments.
  • Expertise in one or more areas such as AI agents, RAG, model evaluation, AI engineering, multimodal AI or applied machine learning.
  • Strong software engineering skills and a willingness to stay hands-on.
  • Curiosity, creativity and a passion for making new technology useful.

Nice to have

  • LangGraph, Microsoft Agent Framework (MAF), CrewAI or similar frameworks.
  • Azure AI Foundry, Azure AI services and cloud-native development.
  • Responsible AI, model safety and governance.
  • Open-source contributions, publications or technical thought leadership.
