Job Summary:

Northeastern Illinois University, Departments of Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), invite applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics and Language Pedagogy (Ph.D. required upon appointment), serving both the Linguistics and the TESOL programs. The successful candidate will anchor the department’s phonetics, phonology, and language-structure curriculum and maintain an active research program engaging undergraduate and MA students.

Job Description:

The successful applicant is expected to teach courses such as Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology, Phonetics and Phonology, Advanced Phonetics and Phonology, Teaching Pronunciation, English Pedagogical Grammar, Structure of Modern English, Principles of Linguistics for Teachers, and undergraduate and MA-level thesis and capstone projects, along with other electives. Applicants may also have opportunities to develop courses in their area of expertise in Linguistics and TESOL. They should expect to direct MA theses and capstone papers, supervise clinical and school-based practicum placements, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to service in departmental, university, and community activities. Please note that all candidates must be able and willing to teach face-to-face courses, in some cases at multiple NEIU campuses, as well as hold office hours face-to-face on-campus.

Minimal Qualifications:

We seek candidates with demonstrated expertise in phonetics and phonology, including their applied and instructional dimensions. Preference will be given to candidates whose work engages second language pronunciation and phonological acquisition, pedagogical grammar and the structure of English, language and multilingualism in immigrant-serving communities, language and disability, psycholinguistics, or signed languages. Experience applying phonetics and phonology in clinical (teaching-practicum) or school-based settings is particularly welcome, as is a record of mentorship within teacher licensure or ESL and bilingual endorsement programs. Applications from candidates with speech-language pathology (SLP) experience are also welcome.
