Supplier Engineer (Atlanta or Birmingham)
- Full Time
About the role
Few engineering jobs give you this much variety. On our team, you see every piece of equipment before it reaches our job sites. That includes massive turbines, transformers, transmission poles, conductor, structural steel and the parts that keep the grid running. If you know how things are made and you like being on the shop floor, this could be a role that leads into your career at Southern Company.
This is a manufacturing engineering role.
The official title says "Supplier Engineer," but think of this job as manufacturing engineering, not quality engineering. We're looking for people who:
- Understand how equipment is fabricated, welded, machined, assembled, and tested
- Have made tough calls on the production floor, under pressure, when the schedule is tight
- Can walk into a supplier's shop, see what's really happening and know what good looks like
Experience that stands out:
- Power generation or transmission equipment manufacturing. This is our ideal background.
- Any non-automotive manufacturing or fabrication. Heavy equipment, industrial, structural, rotating equipment and similar work all translate well.
- Automotive production line experience can be a fit if you worked hands-on in production.
What you'll do
- Serve as a manufacturing subject matter expert (SME) for Southern Company's Generation and Transmission projects, including Combined Cycle, Solar, Battery Storage, and Hydro, plus Transmission's Power Delivery Grid Modernization/Hardening.
- Get on the shop floor. Visit supplier facilities in the U.S. and abroad to perform inspections, surveillances, capability assessments and process validations.
- Make the call. Decide whether equipment is acceptable, including:
- Transmission and substation products (poles, hardware, conductor)
- Transformers and structural steel
- Steam, gas and hydro turbines
- Fans, motors, pumps and more
- Drive quality. Influence the quality of the products we receive and make a meaningful impact on the safety and reliability of our plants.
- Build supplier partnerships that drive continuous improvement.
- Be the link. Communicate supplier issues and corrective actions to Engineering and Procurement and follow customer concerns through to resolution.
Travel
This role requires about 50% travel, both domestic and international. We work hard to make it manageable and reduce the stress that comes with it, and we keep looking for ways to improve; travel is a core part of the job. If you like being on the move and seeing new shops, processes and equipment, you'll do well here.
Where you'll work
You can be based in Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta).
What you bring
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical or a related field) or construction management
- Manufacturing and/or fabrication process experience
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics and specifications
- Experience working with customers and suppliers
- Experience developing and delivering presentations to management
You'll do well here if you:
- Solve problems practically and stay calm under pressure
- Build strong partnerships internally and externally
- Bring a solutions-focused mindset and strong organizational skills
- Can change direction quickly when customer needs shift
- Are committed to safety
