Are you a Registered Nurse with alcohol and other drug experience who is confident working independently in community settings?

We’re looking for an Outreach Drug and Alcohol Nurse to join our SURe program and provide planned withdrawal support to clients in their homes and community. You’ll help clients complete withdrawal safely, manage risks and connect with ongoing treatment and recovery supports.

This is a highly mobile outreach role involving extensive travel to clients’ homes and community settings. You’ll work autonomously while remaining closely connected to a multidisciplinary team and a broader network of health and community providers.

What you’ll be doing

  • Conduct comprehensive AOD, withdrawal, physical health, mental health and risk assessments
  • Determine clients’ suitability for non-residential withdrawal and develop individualised care plans
  • Monitor and manage withdrawal symptoms using evidence-based clinical guidelines
  • Administer and monitor withdrawal pharmacotherapies in collaboration with medical officers and prescribers
  • Identify and respond to clinical deterioration, suicide risk, overdose risk and other complex presentations
  • Provide therapeutic, trauma-informed and recovery-oriented support
  • Deliver harm-reduction education, including overdose prevention and naloxone education
  • Coordinate care with GPs, hospitals, pharmacists, mental health services and other community providers
  • Develop relapse-prevention and post-withdrawal support plans
  • Connect clients with rehabilitation, counselling, housing and other ongoing supports
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
  • Participate in case reviews, team meetings, clinical supervision and service improvement activities.

Who we’re looking for
You’ll be a compassionate clinician who can build strong therapeutic relationships with people experiencing AOD dependence and complex needs.

You’ll bring:

  • Experience working with people experiencing AOD dependence, withdrawal and harm minimisation
  • Knowledge of mental health and experience supporting people with co-occurring AOD and mental health needs
  • Understanding of pharmacotherapy, overdose prevention and naloxone
  • Strong clinical assessment, monitoring and risk-management skills
  • Confidence working independently in outreach and community settings
  • Strong communication skills and a person-centred, trauma-informed and recovery-focused approach

Qualifications and requirements
To be considered for this role, you’ll need:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
  • A Bachelor of Nursing
  • Minimum AOD Skill Set qualification
  • Current CPR certification
  • A current unrestricted Victorian Driver’s Licence
  • MARAM training, or willingness to complete this when you commence.

As this is an outreach position, you’ll need to be comfortable travelling regularly, driving fleet vehicles and supporting clients in their homes and community settings.
