Description
At Northrop Grumman, our employees have incredible opportunities to work on revolutionary systems that impact people's lives around the world today, and for generations to come. Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nation's history - from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. We look for people who have bold new ideas, courage and a pioneering spirit to join forces to invent the future, and have fun along the way. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity and bringing your whole self to work — and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history. The Mechanical Engineering Organization seeks a Dynamics and Controls: Engineer Systems Modeling & Simulation – Level 4 at the Chandler, AZ facility.
Essential Functions- Dynamics:
- Under limited supervision, the candidate will develop complex multi-body dynamic simulations for separation events like fairing deployment, staging, and spacecraft separation of launch vehicles, validate and verify simulation quality, and quantify separation induced disturbances during these separation events
- Work closely with cross-disciplinary team to positively influence design maturation, incorporate relevant controls effects into dynamics simulations, and validate proper implementation and usage of simulation outputs in downstream analyses
- Experience with guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) algorithms
- Define scope of task, perform analyses utilizing appropriate classical and computer aided techniques, and prepare results for presentations and analysis reports
- Contribute to the success of vital defense systems that protect the nation by supporting cutting-edge development of upcoming long-range missile defense interceptors, targets, space launch, and strike vehicles
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) with 8 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 6 years of related engineering experience, or a PhD in STEM with 4 years of related engineering experience
- Ability to obtain a US Government Secret security clearance
- In-depth knowledge of rigid body dynamics, flexible body dynamics, coordinate frame transformations and Euler's rotation equations
- Strong interest in applied mathematics with a solid understanding of linear algebra including vector/matrix operations, coordinate transformations, eigenvalues/eigenvectors, and their application to dynamics, controls, and simulation development
Preferred Qualifications:
- Active US Government Secret security clearance, or higher at the time of application
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering
- Proficiency in C++
- Proficiency in MATLAB or Python
- Ability to apply fundamental analytical techniques and prepare written analyses
- Previous experience with launch vehicle control and/or separation analysis
- Experience in sensor navigation, including inertial, radio, and/or optical navigation techniques
- Experience in strategic missile guidance and implementation of guidance algorithms
- Experience in trajectory optimization, non-linear control, and/or adaptive/autonomous flight control systems
- Experience with optimal state estimation filters (e.g. Kalman)
- Demonstrated knowledge of aerodynamic modeling, flight mechanics, missile/re-entry vehicle dynamics
- Familiarity with Linux
