Senior Quality Engineer
About the role
Key Responsibilities
Test Design and Strategy:
- Designs comprehensive test plans that align with quality goals of the function and product vision.
- Chooses strategies based on behavior to inform architecture and tooling initiatives.
- Evaluates coverage to account for technical unknowns and scalability across systems within own functional test area.
Test Execution:
- Manages test environments and ensures adequate data for testing.
- Executes validation tasks for critical service areas by following test plans, identifying defects, and escalating risks to support prioritization and service quality.
- Follows documentation for failures across components, working with others to implement corrections where needed.
- Performs risk-based regression to balance speed, risk, and automation coverage across products or services.
Defect Tracking and Management:
- Reproduces, diagnoses, and collaborates on customer-reported issues, ensuring timely resolution.
- Investigates and escalates defects across features.
- Owns reporting on test progress/defects, working with engineering to address root causes.
- Contributes to post-incident (post-mortem) reviews by gathering relevant data, documenting observations, and assisting in the identification of root causes; supports the drafting of findings and preventative actions for leadership review.
- Leads triage for components on root cause analysis to uncover recurring quality issues and drive improvements.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Assists with cross-functional quality initiatives by tracking test coverage against feature delivery, surfacing test concerns, and supporting coordination with partner teams on test activities.
- Works with cross-functional development team members to align on areas for testing.
- Influences the design and prioritizes testing and tooling.
- Develops and enhances test management and automation tools to improve automation and test processes.
Continuous Improvement:
- Follows and applies established processes to improve consistency and reduce friction in engineering workflows within a defined feature or task area.
Automation:
- Participates in quality improvement efforts by sharing observations and documenting test execution gaps within the team.
- Implements automation scripts by following established patterns to support test coverage within a component or feature.
- Identifies and reports automation issues by executing tests and escalating failures or gaps to senior team members.
- Executes automated tests within Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) workflows and raise issues related to test failures or integration breaks.
Risk Assessment:
- Identifies quality risks early and collaborates to mitigate them.
- Applies quality gate criteria on checklist at key software development checkpoints by reviewing test results, static analysis outputs, and defect trends, soliciting approval for completion.
- Reviews test plans to ensure potential impact areas are accurately identified and addressed by Scrum teams, coordinating across functions to confirm adequate test coverage and risk mitigation.
Test Tooling:
- Develops and enhances test management and automation tools that increase efficiency and scalability.
Additional Responsibilities (as needed):
Performance Testing:
- Tests non-functional requirements, including single-user performance, scalability, and responsiveness under dynamic workloads.
- Engages performance to support load testing, tooling, and system tuning for high-risk or complex scenarios.
- Incorporates user experience considerations into performance assessments to ensure acceptable response times and system usability.
Core Responsibilities
Planning & Execution:
- Independently manages work, monitoring timelines and deliverables to ensure projects or initiatives stay on track and meet requirements.
- Proactively prioritizes work and adapts to resource or timeline shifts, suggesting adjustments to maintain project efficiency.
Collaboration & Partnership:
- Collaborates across teams to align on expectations and achieve shared objectives.
- Builds and maintains a comprehensive understanding of business, stakeholder, and/or customer needs to build and support effective partnerships.
- Actively listens to diverse perspectives and asks questions to ensure understanding of others.
Problem Solving:
- Independently identifies and addresses standard and non-standard issues in accordance with standard practices, escalating more complex issues as appropriate.
- Analyzes data and/or information from multiple sources to troubleshoot standard and non-standard errors.
- Contributes to knowledge sharing and best practices.
Continuous Learning:
- Embraces continuous learning by actively seeking to build knowledge and new skills and/or tools, and staying current with industry trends and best practices.
- Seeks out and leverages feedback and training to improve skills.
- Contributes to a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing with team members.
Continuous Improvement:
- Develops ideas and recommends updates to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of processes, protocols, and workflows within a team.
- Seeks input from team members on alternative approaches and methods for improving work.
