About the role

About 8090

8090 is building Software Factory, an AI-native platform where people and AI agents work together to take enterprise software from business intent to production code, with the documentation, oversight and audit trails that regulated industries require. We serve customers in healthcare, financial services, insurance, life sciences, manufacturing, energy and government, and in March 2026 EY launched its EY.ai PDLC offering on top of our platform.

Founded in 2024 by Chamath Palihapitiya, 8090 raised a $125M Series A led by Salesforce in June 2026. We are scaling quickly, and the finance team is building the foundation that will carry the company through its next stages of growth.

About the Role

As Assistant Controller, you will be the Finance Leader’s right-hand and the day-to-day owner of 8090's accounting engine. You will run a timely, accurate monthly close, produce financial statements, prepare the company for its first, annual audit and design the controls and processes a fast-growing, venture-backed company needs.

This is not a narrowly scoped seat. We are looking for someone with deep public accounting technical skills who also wants to roll up their sleeves beyond the general ledger. For example, as we stand up a broader team, your initial responsibilities will include building the early foundations of equity administration — keeping the cap table clean, processing grants and exercises, and producing stock-based compensation accounting — working alongside Legal, People and our outside advisors.

Location

This is an on-site role based in Redwood City, California.

Responsibilities

Close, reporting and core accounting

  • Own the monthly, quarterly and annual close, including the close calendar, journal entries, account reconciliations and flux analysis.

  • Review and improve payables, receivables, payroll, cash, prepaid and accrual processes.

  • Build and own relevant sections of board and investor reporting packages.

Audit, controls and compliance

  • Own the roadmap from unaudited financial statements today to private-company audit and eventually to a public-company audit. Sequence work across technical accounting policies, systems and close timelines, auditors and advisors to deliver each milestone.

  • Serve as the primary contact for the external audit; prepare PBC schedules and drive a clean, on-time audit.

  • Design and document internal controls and accounting policies that scale toward eventual SOX readiness.

  • Support sales and use tax, transfer pricing, 1099s, property tax and other filings; coordinate with outside tax advisors on income tax provision and returns.

Systems and scale

  • Improve our ERP and finance tech stack, and use automation and AI tools — including our own — to speed up close and reduce manual work.

  • Partner with FP&A, Legal, People and business teams, and help hire and develop future accounting team members.

Required Skills

  • Active CPA license.

  • 7+ years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in public accounting (Big 4 or national firm preferred) at the senior or manager level.

  • 2+ years in a controllership or accounting leadership role at a high-growth or venture-backed company.

  • Strong command of US GAAP, especially ASC 606, plus hands-on experience running a month-end close and leading an external audit.

  • Working knowledge of stock-based compensation (ASC 718) and comfort learning the operational side of equity administration.

  • High attention to detail, sound judgment and the ability to explain complex accounting clearly to non-accountants.

  • Builder mentality: comfortable with ambiguity, setting up processes from scratch and doing hands-on work.

What Sets a Candidate Apart

  • Experience in software, SaaS or AI companies, including usage-based or services revenue.

  • Exposure to SOX readiness, pre-IPO controls or multi-entity consolidation.

  • Experience with a modern ERP (e.g., NetSuite) and close-automation tools, and enthusiasm for using AI in finance workflows.

Expected compensation (US-based employees): $150K - $175k annual salary + equity + benefits. We offer competitive pay and benefits. Compensation may vary depending on many individualized factors, including location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Details of the compensation package, including benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401K, …), will be provided if and when a candidate receives an offer of employment.

Equal Opportunity Statement - 8090 is an Equal Opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to any factor, including veteran status and disability status, protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.
