About the role

About Lumaril

Lumaril is an industrial autonomy company that increases output at existing plants. Our platform connects to a facility's control systems, learns how the operation performs at its best, and continuously optimizes production for higher throughput, better yield, and more reliable operations.

We're actively building a culture that fosters productive collaboration on difficult problems with real-world consequences. We're early-stage, moving fast, and looking for people who thrive with high autonomy (and high ambiguity).

What You'll Do

You'll be the first product designer at Lumaril and own the product experience end to end. Our users are plant operators and engineers deciding, in real time, whether to trust a system that is adjusting their process. The core design problem is making an autonomous system legible, elegant, and intuitive: showing what it sees, what it plans to do, and why, so an operator can understand and work with it with confidence.

You'll work directly with the founders, engineers, and customers, on site at plants when it matters, and ship through fast iteration with real operators.

As the team grows, you'll set the design principles and the hiring bar, with a path to leading the design function and the philosophy of how to transform global industries, including how people interact with autonomous systems.

In this role you will:

Core product UX

  • Turn ambiguous operator and customer problems into clear, shippable designs
  • Conduct user research and testing to deeply understand pain points, workflows, and mental models
  • Prototype and test rapidly with customers from discovery through delivery, using feedback to guide product direction and validate decisions
  • Partner with engineering to ship designs at high fidelity
  • Establish early design principles, patterns, and systems to enable consistency and scalability
  • Simulation and system visualization

  • Design the views that show operators how the system perceives, plans, and acts
  • Use motion, animation and interactive prototypes to make complex system behavior legible, intuitive and elegant for users
  • Work with engineers to visualize what the system sees and decides: live machinery states, sensor inputs, world models, and multi-step plans
  • Design culture and company building

  • Help define the foundation of our design culture and philosophy
  • Lead future hiring and building a full design function for the company
  • Collaborate across product, strategy, and go-to-market to create cohesive experiences that connect product, narrative, and customer value
  • Who You Are

    Requirements

  • A portfolio showing iterative, research-driven design in 0 to 1 or early-stage products
  • 5+ years of product design experience, including UX for complex systems or workflows
  • Proven ability to lead user research, prototyping, and usability testing
  • Fluent in Figma or equivalent, including prototyping and design systems
  • Bonus: if you're comfortable in code and can prototype and ship your own work alongside engineering
  • Strong plus

  • Experience shipping products in B2B markets in fast-paced environments
  • Experience with natural language interfaces (voice, chat, AI-driven UX)
  • Experience with operator/industrial interfaces
  • Experience in robotics, autonomy, or other physical world AI products
  • Strong skills in motion/interactive design or storytelling through data visualization
