The Department of Sociology invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track clinical faculty position in Technology and Society, with an anticipated start date of August 2027. This is a full-time, nine-month academic appointment (August–May), with an annual salary paid over 12 consecutive months, allowing for continuous benefits coverage. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy, Science and Technology Studies, or a closely related field by August 15, 2027. The initial appointment will be for two years; successful candidates upon review will be eligible for renewable three-year contracts. Position Responsibilities

We seek an outstanding teacher whose expertise examines the relationships among technology, society, and public policy. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, artificial intelligence and society; technology governance and regulation; digital inequality and access; data, privacy, and surveillance; technology ethics; digital platforms and democracy; emerging technologies and public institutions; or the social implications of technological change. The successful candidate will teach courses in the newly developed Master of Public Policy (MPP) program, including courses related to Technology and Society, and will help develop and deliver a curriculum that connects technological change with policy analysis, institutions, ethics, and real-world public challenges. Candidates should be prepared to teach and mentor graduate students with varied academic and professional backgrounds and to contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration across the university. Depending on departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise, the successful candidate may also teach relevant undergraduate courses in Sociology and/or related areas.

Primary responsibilities include teaching and advising students in the Master of Public Policy program, contributing to the development and ongoing refinement of new MPP courses and curriculum, and participating in department, college, and university service. The teaching load and other responsibilities will be consistent with LMU’s policies for full-time clinical faculty appointments which is 3 courses per semester. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and help ensure that the MPP curriculum prepares students to understand and address complex public problems involving technology, governance, and society.

The Department of Sociology values collaborative, interdisciplinary, and community-engaged approaches to teaching. We seek a colleague who is excited to teach and mentor a diverse student body in Los Angeles and who can connect conceptual and analytical frameworks to practical policy questions. We welcome candidates who use applied, experiential, and project-based approaches to learning and who can build connections with public agencies, community organizations, nonprofits, and other partners where appropriate.
