About Us

The Global Alliance for the Future of Food is a strategic alliance of philanthropic foundations working together and with partners to transform global food systems. We leverage our collective resources and networks to catalyze action for food systems transformation grounded in principles of equity, interconnectedness, diversity, health, renewability, inclusion, and resilience. Our work includes three interconnected approaches: Convening & Field Building, Co-Creating Insights, and Collaborating for Action. Through these approaches, we connect funders and diverse partners, generate and share knowledge, and catalyze collaborative action from the local to the global level. The Global Alliance operates through a small, globally distributed Secretariat that is fiscally sponsored by Panorama Global. Our fiscal sponsor serves as our legal and administrative home and is responsible for core accounting, payroll, benefits administration, tax, audit, and regulatory compliance functions.

The Role

The Finance Manager is a new role providing oversight and leadership for ensuring that the Global Alliance has the financial information, planning, systems, and reporting needed to effectively deliver on our mission. Reporting to the Operations Director, the Finance Manager will lead the organizational budgeting process; oversee internal financial management and grant tracking; coordinate closely with our fiscal sponsor and Employers of Record; and manage the internal contracting process in close collaboration with our fiscal sponsor.  The Finance Manager’s role will provide program leads with timely, accessible information regarding program budgets and financial commitments.

Because the Global Alliance is fiscally sponsored, this position does not serve as the organization’s accountant, controller, payroll administrator, or legal compliance officer. Those responsibilities sit with our fiscal sponsor and Employers of Record.

This is a hands-on role requiring nonprofit finance experience, a combination of financial stewardship with sound organizational judgment, and a commitment to building simple, effective administrative processes that enable the organization to focus on advancing the mission.

This role is fully remote, with a 4-day work week.

Major Responsibilities

Fiscal Sponsor & Financial Partner Management

  • In partnership with the Operations Director, serve as the primary liaisons with our fiscal sponsor on financial matters.
  • Review financial reports prepared by the fiscal sponsor to ensure alignment with internal budgets, commitments, and projections.
  • Partner with the fiscal sponsor to reconcile internal financial tracking with fiscal sponsor records and maintain a shared, accurate view of the organization’s finances.
  • Coordinate with the fiscal sponsor on accounts payable, accounts receivable, contracting, and administrative processes managed by the fiscal sponsor.
  • Ensure that the Secretariat understands and follows relevant financial policies and procedures established by the Global Alliance and/or fiscal sponsor

Revenue, Grants & Financial Stewardship

  • Maintain a comprehensive overview of organizational revenue (member contributions, partner grants, and other sources).
  • Ensure the accurate tracking of funding commitments, payment schedules, grant periods, restrictions, reporting deadlines, and other requirements.
  • Support the development of grant proposal and report budgets with the Secretariat and fiscal sponsor.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Director to monitor spending against grant budgets and flag potential underspending, overspending, or other issues early.

Contracts & Financial Administration

  • Oversee the internal process for consultant and vendor contracts, grants, partnership agreements, and other financial commitments.
  • Coordinate with the fiscal sponsor to ensure contracts and payments are processed accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain internal tracking of contracts, grants, payment schedules, deliverables, and renewal or expiration dates.
  • Review proposed financial commitments to ensure they are appropriately budgeted and approved before contracts are initiated.

Financial Management, Planning & Analysis

  • Working closely with the Director of Operations, lead the development of the annual organizational budget in collaboration with relevant team members.
  • Monitor revenue and expenses against budget and provide timely analysis of variances, emerging risks, and opportunities.
  • Develop or maintain clear, accessible financial reports and dashboards for senior leadership, staff, the Steering Committee, and members as appropriate.
  • Work closely with team leads to develop, monitor, and manage project and initiative budgets.
  • Collaborate with our fiscal sponsor to maintain a comprehensive picture of unrestricted and restricted resources and ensure that funding is appropriately reflected in organizational and program budgets.
  • Over time, develop and maintain multi-year financial forecasts, revenue projections, and scenario planning to support organizational strategy and long-term sustainability.
  • Develop, document, and continuously improve internal policies, processes, workflows, and tools.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit finance, operations, administration, or a related field; experience with GAAP accounting.
