About the role

NOV is seeking an NDE Engineer to support the development, evaluation, validation, and improvement of nondestructive inspection technologies for steel and tubular products.

This role combines hands-on NDT/NDE experience with engineering analysis, inspection technology, experimental testing, and data interpretation. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in ultrasonic inspection and experience with electromagnetic inspection methods, with particular emphasis on detecting flaws in steel, steel pipe, tubular products, or other metallic components.

The position will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, software, and operations teams to improve inspection capability, reliability, repeatability, and defect detection performance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, evaluate, validate, and improve NDE inspection methods and technologies for steel and tubular products.
  • Apply Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) to flaw-detection and inspection applications.
  • Support or perform electromagnetic inspection (EMI) and related technologies such as Eddy Current, Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL), or comparable electromagnetic NDT methods.
  • Perform or support direct inspection and flaw detection of steel, steel pipe, tubular products, welds, and other metallic components.
  • Develop and improve inspection techniques, scan plans, calibration methods, reference standards, procedures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Analyze inspection data to characterize flaws and evaluate inspection sensitivity, reliability, repeatability, and false-call performance.
  • Support development, qualification, and validation of NDE equipment, sensors, probes, transducers, instrumentation, and data-acquisition systems.
  • Troubleshoot inspection equipment and investigate technical issues affecting data quality or defect detection.
  • Use engineering analysis, experimental testing, signal processing, and data analysis to solve NDE problems.
  • Support NDE technology development from concept and laboratory evaluation through implementation in manufacturing or inspection environments.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, materials, software, manufacturing, quality, and operations teams.
  • Prepare technical reports, procedures, presentations, test documentation, and engineering recommendations.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on inspection efficiency, accuracy, reliability, and product quality.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in Nondestructive Testing (NDT) or Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE).
  • Hands-on experience with Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
  • Experience with Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), advanced ultrasonic inspection, or comparable advanced UT technology.
  • Experience with electromagnetic NDT/inspection, including Eddy Current, MFL, EMI, EMAT, or related methods.
  • Experience applying NDT methods to steel, steel pipe, tubular products, welds, or comparable metallic materials.
  • Ability to interpret inspection results and communicate technical findings to engineering and operations teams.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in laboratory, manufacturing, inspection, and engineering environments.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of directly relevant NDE/NDT engineering experience preferred; candidates with additional relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Experience with OCTG, tubular products, steel mills, pipe manufacturing, railroad inspection, aerospace metallic components, or other steel inspection applications.
  • Experience with NDE method development, inspection system development, or inspection equipment qualification.
  • Experience with TOFD, AUT, FMC/TFM, UTSW, guided-wave ultrasonics, or other advanced NDE methods.
  • Knowledge of probability of detection (POD), defect characterization, calibration, inspection sensitivity, and validation.
  • Experience with signal processing, image processing, data acquisition, sensors, probes, transducers, or instrumentation.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, C/C++, or similar technical programming tools.
  • Experience with FEA/FEM, COMSOL, ANSYS, or other modeling and simulation tools.
  • Familiarity with ASNT, ASTM, ASME, API, AWS, or similar NDT and inspection standards.
  • Research, product development, manufacturing engineering, or advanced inspection technology experience.
