Senior Software Developer – Cloud Platform Engineering (OCI / Kubernetes / Java)
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Software Developer to design, develop, enhance, and maintain scalable, secure, and highly available cloud-native software solutions within Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
In this IC3 individual contributor role, you will work on the Data Plane and Control Plane components of Oracle's IoT platform, combining hands-on software engineering with cloud infrastructure automation, container orchestration, and production troubleshooting.
You will collaborate with engineering, QA, and DevOps teams to improve platform reliability, optimize performance, automate deployments, and deliver high-quality software solutions.
The ideal candidate brings strong Java development experience, hands-on expertise in Docker and Kubernetes, infrastructure automation capabilities, and practical experience operating software in cloud environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Cloud Platform Development: Design, develop, and enhance software components supporting the Data Plane and Control Plane of Oracle's OCI IoT platform.
- Containerization and Orchestration: Develop, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes, ensuring scalability, availability, and operational stability.
- Infrastructure Automation: Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration, and maintenance using Terraform or Ansible to improve deployment consistency and operational efficiency.
- Software Engineering and API Development: Develop and optimize Java-based software components and APIs, applying software design principles, concurrency concepts, secure coding practices, and appropriate testing strategies.
- Production Reliability and Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve application, infrastructure, networking, and integration issues while improving observability, system performance, and service availability.
- Security and Operational Excellence: Implement cloud security best practices, support vulnerability remediation, and contribute to maintenance, patching, monitoring, and reliability improvements.
- Cross-Functional Engineering Collaboration: Partner with development, QA, DevOps, and other stakeholders to deliver software enhancements, conduct code reviews, resolve defects, and improve engineering standards.
- Technical Ownership and Continuous Improvement: Independently manage assigned engineering deliverables, contribute to architecture-aligned design decisions, mentor colleagues where appropriate, and identify opportunities to improve development and operational processes.
Qualifications & Skills
Mandatory
| Area | Essential requirements |
|---|---|
| Education | BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. |
| Experience | 5+ years of software industry experience, including 3+ years in a senior developer or technical leadership capacity. |
| Programming | Experience in Java and Python, including Java software design principles, concurrency, debugging, and development best practices. |
| Containers | Strong hands-on expertise with Docker and Kubernetes, including deployment and troubleshooting. |
| Infrastructure as Code | Practical experience automating infrastructure using Terraform or Ansible. |
| Cloud platforms | Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform: OCI, AWS, or Azure. |
| Software engineering | Ability to design, develop, test, troubleshoot, and optimize scalable software components and APIs. |
| Production troubleshooting | Ability to diagnose and resolve software and infrastructure issues in production environments. |
| Cloud networking | Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including cloud configuration and troubleshooting. |
| Cloud security | Knowledge of cloud security and secure software development practices. |
| Collaboration | Ability to work independently, collaborate across engineering teams, communicate effectively, and adapt to new technologies. |
Good-to-Have
Prior experience working with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
Experience developing and deploying CI/CD pipelines across multi-cluster, multi-region, or multi-architecture environments.
Experience in the Internet of Things (IoT) domain.
Exposure to cloud-native platform engineering involving Data Plane and Control Plane components.
Important classification note: The original JD explicitly lists IoT experience and complex CI/CD environments as preferred. OCI-specific experience is not mandatory because AWS or Azure experience is also accepted. Data Plane/Control Plane experience is treated as an advantage rather than a screening requirement because the JD describes it as work to be performed, not an explicit prior-experience prerequisite.
Self-Assessment Questions
Do I have at least five years of software industry experience, including three years of senior development or technical leadership responsibility?
Have I worked hands-on with Java and Python, including developing, debugging, and optimizing software components?
Am I confident deploying and troubleshooting Docker-based applications in Kubernetes environments?
Have I automated infrastructure using Terraform or Ansible and worked with OCI, AWS, or Azure?
Can I independently investigate production issues involving applications, APIs, networking, security, or cloud infrastructure and collaborate effectively to resolve them?
