About the role

About Airwallex

Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.

We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.

We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,700 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles to see it in full.

How you'll make impact

You'll strengthen Airwallex's global AML/CTF framework so the business can grow safely across markets, products, and payment flows. You'll develop and maintain risk-based policies, processes, controls, and guidance covering customer due diligence, enhanced due diligence, beneficial ownership, transaction monitoring, sanctions-related financial crime controls, and higher-risk customer management. You'll translate regulatory developments and financial crime risks into practical requirements, partnering with Product, Risk, Data, Engineering, Operations, Compliance Technology, and regional compliance teams to improve onboarding, screening, monitoring, payment, and case-management workflows. You'll support escalated customer, account, and transaction reviews, regulatory examinations, partner bank inquiries, audits, governance reporting, training, remediation, and continuous improvement across the global programme.

This role can be based in Dallas, Texas or Birmingham, UK.

What we're looking for

Essentials

  • 7+ years of experience in AML/CTF, financial crime compliance, or a related risk or regulatory function within financial services, fintech, payments, banking, or a similarly complex regulated environment.

  • Demonstrated understanding of AML/CTF laws, regulations, enforcement trends, and industry practices across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Experience supporting or managing AML programme components such as customer risk assessment, customer due diligence, enhanced due diligence, transaction monitoring, suspicious activity investigations, or sanctions-related financial crime controls.

  • Experience working with customer onboarding, transaction monitoring, screening, case-management, or other compliance technology, including alert review, case disposition, or control enhancement processes.

  • Ability to assess complex customer profiles, commercial transactions, products, and cross-border payment flows and identify practical, risk-based recommendations.

  • Strong written communication, analytical, project management, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work independently and collaborate across a global programme.

Preferred

  • CAMS or an equivalent globally recognised AML or financial crime compliance credential.

  • Experience interacting with regulators, auditors, correspondent banks, financial institution partners, or other external stakeholders on AML/CTF matters.

  • Experience in fintech and payments, including cross-border payments, virtual accounts, multi-currency wallets, or multi-entity regulated groups.

  • Experience partnering with Product, Data, Engineering, or Operations teams to embed AML/CTF requirements into automated workflows, dashboards, or other technology-enabled compliance tools.

You'll thrive here if

  • You've operated in a compliance-heavy environment and know how to move fast without cutting the corners that matter.

  • You're comfortable operating across time zones with a globally distributed team, including colleagues based in APAC and EMEA.

  • You connect dots across functions and hold the big picture without losing grip on the details.

  • You simplify complexity rather than hiding behind it.

  • You say what you mean. You're direct, but you lead with respect.
