Emergency Radiologist
About the role
The Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic Arizona invites highly qualified emergency radiologists to join the growing Emergency & Hospital Radiology (EHR) Division. This primarily remote overnight position combines the flexibility of teleradiology with meaningful engagement in a premier academic medical center, offering a unique opportunity to build a sustainable career without sacrificing academic involvement, clinical complexity, or collaboration.
Why This Opportunity Stands Apart
Practice at Mayo Clinic from Anywhere: Work remotely from anywhere in the continental United States while contributing to one of the world's most respected healthcare institutions.
Sustainable Overnight Schedule: Purposeful staffing, including seven radiologists covering six overnight positions, allows regular rotation into remote daytime subspecialty work. As a result, the average annual overnight workload is approximately 104 shifts, substantially lower than the 121 shifts typical of a traditional 7-on/14-off model. Overnight shifts will be comprised of an equal number of early (5 p.m.-1 a.m.) and deep overnight (8 p.m.-6 a.m.) shifts, week-long stints, always with no less than 2 weeks between scheduled overnight shift weeks.
More Than Teleradiology: Radiologists participate in a limited number of daytime subspecialty shifts aligned with their interests and expertise. These opportunities may include outpatient imaging, procedures, multidisciplinary collaboration, and direct engagement with colleagues and trainees.
Meaningful Clinical Practice Interpret a diverse mix of CT, radiography, ultrasound, and MRI studies across complex emergency and inpatient populations, supported by Mayo Clinic's highly subspecialized practice. Our division interprets cases exclusively for Mayo Clinic Arizona, so our referrers know us, and we know them.
Academic Engagement Contribute to resident education, mentorship, and an expanding radiology training program while remaining actively connected to an academic department.
Practice Environment
Mayo Clinic Arizona's emergency department cares for patients across the full spectrum of acute and urgent disease, supported by internationally recognized programs in oncology and transplantation.
Unlike many high-volume overnight practices, staffing is intentionally designed to promote thoughtful interpretation, collaboration, and high-quality patient care.
Following planned expansion, overnight coverage will include a team of two non-neuroradiologists and one neuroradiologist with overlapping schedules and robust subspecialty backup. Faculty supervise and overread studies performed by on-call radiology residents, creating meaningful opportunities for teaching and mentorship.
Candidate Qualifications
We seek physicians who bring both clinical versatility and a commitment to academic medicine, including:
Expertise in emergency and acute inpatient imaging across abdominal, thoracic, and musculoskeletal radiology
Experience interpreting emergency neuroradiology studies, including stroke imaging
Fellowship training in body imaging or emergency radiology preferred, though equivalent experience will be considered
Interest in resident education, supervision, and mentorship
A Career Designed for Long-Term Satisfaction
In addition to overnight responsibilities, faculty participate in a limited number of subspecialty daytime shifts tailored to their experience, interests, and training.
A small portion of these shifts are performed on-site and are intentionally bundled to foster meaningful face-to-face collaboration while preserving the flexibility of primarily remote practice.
This model offers a rare combination of:
Academic engagement
Outpatient and procedural exposure
Geographic flexibility
Professional autonomy
Sustainable overnight coverage
Compensation & Benefits
Mayo Clinic offers highly competitive compensation for an academic position with a comprehensive benefits package associated with a 1.0 FTE appointment, including (but not limited to):
Employer-funded pension
Generous professional expense allowance
Travel support for on-site activities
Reimbursement of licensure and credentialing expenses
