The candidate will have the opportunity to interact with an interdisciplinary team of engineering faculty and others in related fields at Penn State. The position will include an expectation for active participation in focused mentoring and professional development opportunities.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is home to 34 faculty, ~100 graduate students, and ~400 undergraduate students. The faculty conduct in excess of $17M per year of research across a broad spectrum of traditional and emerging areas in biomedical engineering. Penn State actively encourages and provides resources for interdisciplinary research collaboration through university-level institutes in the areas of healthcare, materials and data science/computation. The Department offers separate B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs in biomedical engineering. The Department has a dedicated faculty and staff forming a strong sense of community and fostering a welcoming culture. Further information on the Department can be found at: https://www.bme.psu.edu. The BME department has strong relationships with the School of Medicine, Materials Research Institute (https://www.mri.psu.edu), Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (https://www.huck.psu.edu), and the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (https://www.icds.psu.edu).
This position will potentially be supported in part by the Penn State Huck Institutes of Life Sciences (https://www.huck.psu.edu/) and is expected to collaborate closely with the Centers and expertise in the Huck. Qualification for the position at each rank is a doctorate in engineering or a related field that must be completed by the start date in the position. The successful applicant at each rank will have demonstrated outstanding scholarly research, and will have a strong track record in engineering education, as well as a commitment to inclusivity. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, to develop an internationally recognized, externally-funded research program, and to contribute to the operation and promotion of the department, college, university, and profession through service.

The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (Huck) serves as Penn State’s primary engine for interdisciplinary research across the life sciences, creating connections among researchers, technologies, and shared infrastructure that span traditional disciplinary and college boundaries. Through its research centers, graduate programs, core facilities, and cross-college faculty networks, Huck provides an especially strong environment for research at the interface of engineering, cell biology, immunology, genomics, and translational biomedicine.
For this position, particularly relevant Huck strengths and opportunities for collaboration include:
- Center for Cellular Dynamics, which brings together expertise in cell biology, molecular mechanisms, advanced imaging, and quantitative approaches to understanding cellular organization and function—providing a strong foundation for research in cell engineering, tissue engineering, and cell-based therapies.
- Center for Molecular Immunology and Infectious Disease, which connects faculty working across immunology, host–pathogen interactions, inflammation, and immune responses and offers opportunities for collaboration in immune-cell engineering and immune-modulation approaches.
- Huck core facilities and advanced technology platforms, including capabilities in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microscopy and imaging, flow cytometry, and other molecular and cellular characterization approaches that can support mechanistic and translational research in engineered cells and tissues.
- Cross-institute opportunities at the life sciences–engineering interface, particularly through Huck's connections with the Materials Research Institute, Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, and Penn State College of Medicine. These relationships create opportunities to integrate biomaterials, advanced manufacturing, computation and AI, molecular and cellular biology, and clinical perspectives in the development of next-generation biomedical technologies.
The successful candidate would also strengthen Penn State's interdisciplinary graduate education through participation in relevant Huck Intercollege Graduate Degree Programs, including Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Biosciences, Bioinformatics and Genomics, Neuroscience, and related programs, providing opportunities to mentor students and build collaborations across colleges and disciplines.
